Recycling Event at Urbana High School

Did you know that plastic bag that diapers/baby wipes come in is recyclable? The cap from your Laundry Detergent, Dish detergent and spray bottle are also recyclable. Our local recycler does not take it. If these items are in your bin, they end up going to the landfill. However, Urbana H.S. Family & Consumer Science will collect those and send them into TerraCycle who can turn them into other products. If you would put these items in an envelope, bag or box and send them through the district mail and send them to me, we would gladly take care of them. See the attachment for a picture of the collectible items. Thanks! Susan H. Fleece, M.Ed.

7th Grade Science
By Stephanie Forson

7th grade Science students are working this week
on dissecting owl pellets to explore the world of
differing internal structures found in multicellular
organisms. They've worked hard assembling the
skeletons to identify what their owl ate. They are
also continuing their work on their Ecosystem
Animoto projects.

8th Grade Science
By Debbie Bey

In Mrs. Bey's science class, the students made roller
coasters using cardboard, duct tape and pipe insulation
in order to study force and motion. Students calculated
speed, velocity, potential energy, kinetic energy, energy
lost due to friction and the efficiency of the roller
coaster.
Currently, we are doing a technology project. The
students are creating a presentation using software of
their choice to show the elements of force and motion,
and Newton's Laws of Motion. Once finished they are
using their gaggle accounts to mail their project to my
gaggle account.

HS Basketball Games
If any Jr. High students plan on attending the high

Technology Applications- Urbana Lib Dub
urbanalipdub.blogspot.com
By Joachim LaValley
On December 20th, 2012 the 7th and 8th grade
technology classes carried out the 1st ever lip
dub in Urbana City Schools history.

A lip dub is a type of video that combines lip-
synching and audio dubbing to make a music
video. It is made by filming individuals or a
group of people lip-synching while listening to a
song or any recorded audio then dubbing over
it in post editing with the original audio of the
song. – Wikipedia

The 8th grade Technology Applications
students communicated with Digital Media class
in Lapeer, Michigan via Google Hangout. They
discussed how the Digital Media class went
about the planning process. Next the UJHS
tech students planned where the students
would walk, how the transitions would take
place, the groups that would appear in the video
and how to incorporate all students who wanted
to take part in this project. The UJHS student
body walked through the lip dub on
Wednesday, December 19th and then taped
the final project on December 20th. We had two
takes and decided to go with the second take
as the take that would serve as the video that
we would edit. Audio was removed and the
songs, “Good Feeling” by Flo Rida, “Good
Time” by Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen, and
“Gangnam Style” by PSY were all mixed into an
audio track and “dubbed” over the video.
Throughout the remainder of the day you could
hear students singing bits and pieces of the
song as they transferred from class to class.
More info about our process and the entire lip
dub video can be found on
urbanalipdub.blogspot.com. The 8th grade
technology students truly did an amazing job
and we would like to thank all those involved
who made this project a reality.
