This is a time for you to review with your son/daughter the items in his/her class portfolios (if available), a time for your student to share what is happening in his/her classes, and a time to set achievable academic goals for the next nine weeks of school. You may have a brief opportunity (3-5 minutes) to speak with your student’s teachers. There will be other parents and students in the room for their conferences; therefore, teachers are available for a very brief consultation. Longer conferences with individual teachers may be scheduled for a later date, if necessary. In addition, if you have confidential information to discuss and you would feel more comfortable scheduling a meeting, please feel free to contact the school counselor, Kim Wolverton, in order to set up a time (653-1441).

Please choose the day that works best for you, Tuesday or Thursday, to attend your student’s conference. Begin the conference by picking up a copy of your son/daughter’s current grades for the 2nd nine weeks at the table located in front of the main office. When you pick up the sheets, please step away from the table to allow your student some privacy as you review the grades. You and your student will follow your student’s schedule for each graded subject area (skip lunch and study hall). You may visit the classes you feel are necessary to attend and this may or may not include all of your student’s core academic classes. You will have one hour and five minutes on Tuesday or one hour on Thursday to conduct all of your student-led conferences. If the above time schedule does not work with your schedule, please try to come to the cycle that works for you. The purpose of the schedule is to stagger the number of parents and students in a classroom at one time. If there are too many parents and students in a room, please feel free to move on to the next class on your student’s schedule and return to the class that was too full at a later time.

Note: Conferences will end promptly at 6:30 pm on Tuesday and 6:15 pm on Thursday. Also, if your student has Mrs. Morgan, Mr. Lammers, Mr. O’Kane, Mrs. Padilla, Mrs. Seigel, Mr. Sapp, or Mr. Myers, these teachers will only be available on Thursday from 4:05 – 6:15 pm. Mrs. Morgan, Mr. Lammers, Mr. O’Kane, Mrs. Padilla, and Mrs. Seigel will be located in the library. Mr. Sapp and Mr. Myers will be located in the band and choir rooms.
URBANA JUNIOR HIGH
STUDENT-LED CONFERENCE IN 3 EASY STEPS

The student part of the student-led conference requires certain responsibilities of you, the student. These responsibilities are listed below to help remind you of what you need to do.

1. Pick up a copy of your current grades for the 2nd nine weeks at the table located in front of the main office. Please move away from the table to review your grades in privacy.

2. Follow your class schedule for your conferences. You will skip lunch and study hall. Remember, you may also skip classes you feel are not necessary to visit.

3. In the classrooms, review your portfolios (if available) within your block of time. Fill out the goal sheet as a part of your student-led conference. (Put your completed goal sheet on your refrigerator or at your study area at home so it may be a daily reminder of your personal academic plans.) Introduce your teacher to your parents.

A’s and B’s for Parents

Attendance
Businesses know how important attendance is. When they call schools before hiring a graduate, they ask about attendance first and only later about grades. Show your student that you believe attendance is important. You go to work even if you have a headache or the weather is cold—so, too, your student should go to school on those days.

Attitude
Jesse Jackson has said, “It’s your attitude and not your aptitude that determines your altitude.” In other words, even the brightest student can fail if he/she doesn’t work hard. Let your students know you expect them to try their best.

Achievement
Everyone needs goals. Help your student set goals and achieve them. When he/she reaches one goal, show that you are pleased; then help your student work on setting even higher goals.

Be Positive
Low self-esteem may be keeping your student from reaching his/her potential. If you suspect this may be so, try to focus on the positive. Talk to your student about “things you are working on” rather than “things you do badly.”

Be Consistent
Tell your student you expect him/her to study each day. Daily check the planner for assignments. Don’t let your student put off homework until late evening. Allow the student to select a time for homework and then stick to it.

Be There for Your Student
Take time to both talk and listen to your student. Plan some one on one time with each child each week. During these times alone, you can talk about your hopes and expectations for your child.
